On the Farm is a short novel that tells the story of a young Manhattan businessman as he visits his aging mother on her unkempt farm. Like several of Updike's works, is set in rural southeastern Pennsylvania. As he explains in his 1968 interview with The Paris Review, "I am drawn to southeastern Pennsylvania because I know how things happen there, or at least how they used to happen.
