Under the Dome tells the story of a strange occurrence in the otherwise normal town of Chester's Mill, Maine, when the town and its residents become trapped under a mysterious, impermeable dome that inexplicably falls from the sky. Notably, King made two previous efforts to write, as he explains on his website, about the idea of "people trapped in an increasingly lethal environment." He first began to write Under the Dome in 1978, and then revisited a similar idea with the unpublished novel The Cannibals, which tells the story of an apartment building that traps its dwellers inside.
