  • Capote, Truman
  • The Grass Harp
  • Hard Cover. New York: Random House, 1951. First Edition. Very Good / Dust Jacket Included.
  • Illustrated by Anna Mayerson. First edition, first printing, in first issue binding (coarse cloth). Signed and inscribed by Capote on the front free endpaper: "for John Carbone / affectionately / Truman Capote". Very good, with some light toning to the extremities, remnants of a removed bookplate to the front free endpaper, tiny stain to the bottom edge, otherwise clean pages; price-clipped dust jacket, with some light wear to the extremities, minor rubbing to the hinges, discreet tape reinforcements to the verso at the spine head, some faint soiling to the otherwise bright panels. A tight and attractive copy. The Grass Harp is the author's second novel and contains an intricately illustrated frontispiece by Anna Mayerson. The story is set in a small Southern town and tells of a young orphaned boy who is being raised by three elderly women. After a household dispute, two of the women take the boy and run away to live in a tree house on the edge of town, where they continue to interact with each other and the townspeople. While there is no climax or moral purpose to the plot, The Grass Harp is a wonderful novel because of Capote's skillful prose and adept ability to create meaningful and relatable characters. Published when he was only twenty-six years old, the novel was undoubtedly influenced by the author's upbringings; Capote spent his childhood in Monroeville, Alabama, where he was raised by relatives after his parents' divorce and spent many hours playing with his lifelong friend Harper Lee.
