Important Early Silk & Gold-Metal-Thread Khotan 'Palace Rug' (Qing Dynasty), East Turkestan, late 18th century, silk/gold- metal-thread, approx. 247 x 155 cm, condition: 2-3 (good condition), superb silk rug with gold-metal brocaded field made for the forbidden-city in Bejing (so-called palace rug), the field of the rug is modeled after early chinese tile patterns which also were found in the palace rooms of the forbidden city in Beijing, the gold-yellow border shows stylized ascending plant forms, these precious works were often made in Khotan, Kashgar, Samarkand and Yarkand, later pieces were made in the workshops of Ningxia or Beijing (in the period of the 17th century till 1800 this type of rugs with metal were made mostly for the forbidden city in Beijing, yellow five- clawed dragon patterns or signed pieces with room designations were only made for the emperor of china), important rug with high- quality indigo coloration, original condition, rare, museum quality, (comparison of similar signed piece: Hali, The International Journal of Oriental Carpets and Textiles, Vol.II No.2, Summer 1979, p.18).*
