A VERY FINE GILT BRONZE AND ENAMELED MOUNTED LEATHER FOLIO, AUGUST KLEIN, VIENNA, CIRCA 1897.
The large rectangular folio with gilt embossed raised borders, the sunken cover set with an ornate, finely crafted gilt bronze, champlevÃ© and translucent enamel heraldic crest depicting two relief sculpted opposing helmets one mounted with a reared Pegasus the other with a banner and below a shield with winged wheel on blue enameled ground and checkerboard pattern on the left and a red enameled field on the right set with flower heads and a star all within a circular medallion banded in flower heads and with the date 1837 at top and 1897 below. The interior corners of cover set with champlevÃ© enamel plaques and the outer margins banded in champlevÃ© enamel with beaded border and bullion tassel on spine. The interior of folio lined in red silk with gilt embossed makers mark and the Imperial Warrant, AUGUST KLEIN Wien Graben No. 20. The verso set with four gilt medallion feet at each corner. 17.25 inches x 13.25 inches (43.5 cm x 33.5 cm).
August Klein (1824 - 1890), started working as a bookbinder. In 1847 he established his own company in Vienna which quickly became successful. Due to his growing success in 1856 he opened a shop in Paris and in 1863 a shop in London. Kleinâ€™s worked received numerous awards at various exhibitions and he himself was made a Knight of Honor by Emperor Franz Joseph in 1881 and eventually the Imperial Warrant (Supplier to the Court).
