A great map of the western territories and the new state of California from this superb series of maps originated by Samuel Mitchell in 1846. This map was published just after gold was discovered, triggering the addition of California as a state. Oregon Territory takes in all of present day Washington and Idaho. The huge Utah Territory covers the region, labeled Fremont Basin, and stretches from the California border to just past the Rocky Mountains. New Mexico Territory (also formed in 1850) encompasses parts of present-day Colorado and Arizona and its southern boundary is on the Gila River - pre Gadsden Purchase. The map includes the major routes West at the time (Spanish and Oregon Trails, Lewis and Clark's route, etc.) Utah and Oregon Territories extend to the Rocky Mountains. The Colorado mine fields had not yet been discovered, but there are Gold Mines along Kearney's Route in southern New Mexico.
