Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A gathering of three hand-built terracotta figures, two standing and one kneeling. The first standing figure displays chalky-white detailing on a gray surface, and has attenuated limbs, coffee-bean-shaped eyes, protruding ears, and a tall, rounded brow. A second standing figure, with red pigment on a buff surface, has arched feet, attenuated limbs, and classic Jalisco 'sheepface' characteristics such as pointed ears, a conical nose, and a very tall brow with incised diagonal designs. Last is a kneeling sheepface figure displaying looped arms, protruding breasts, a conical nose, pointed ears with large earspools, and a tall brow with a wavy headband; all details painted white on a buff surface. Size (tallest): 5" H (12.7 cm).
Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery

Gray figure has loss to surface pigment, minor losses to hands, feet, and one shoulder. Red figure has repair to brow and one leg, and minor losses to nose and hands. Kneeling figure has minor losses to back near feet. All figures have pigment loss as well as earthen and mineral deposits.
