This is the 1875 E. Dentu (Paris) publication of L'Amour au Dix-Huitieme Siecle (171 pages), with selections edited by J. de Goncourt. This has been recovered by the french bindery Taffin, as indicated by their imprint to the bottom of the inside front cover. The cover, dark green morocco front and back, blending to brown at the spine, which has five raised bands gold, is in good condition, with shallow splits at the top edge of the spine, and scuffs to the upper outside corners. The borders merge to brown. I assume this was the original intent, as that is the color of the spine. The gold and red lettering and design are unfaded. The leather and gold wrap-around to the inside covers. The front inside cover has the book's only attachment, the bookplate of Marie Louise Le Bel. There is a small pencil notation on a blank front end page, stating this is the Ed. Originale, and a printed notice, "Tirage a Petit Nombre, plus quelques exemplaires sur papier du Chine, Whatman, de Hollande, velin teinte", though the specific number is not stated. The border illustrations, frames that appear on every text spread, are by Meaulle, but the full page frontispiece etching (with a foxed tissue guard) is by Boilvin. The art is lightly foxed, but not faded or otherwise stained. There are a number of shallow edge tears, and corner creases, though most page have neither. The most egregious flaw is to the upper outside corner of the left hand page in the final numbered spread (170-171), which has a missing piece. The overall page conditions are very good. There are few stains, most light. The text and border illustrations are unfaded. The only writing and attachment are those noted above. The binding is tight throughout, with no loose or missing pages. Bookseller Inventory # 101
