Byzantine Empire, Constantinople, ca. 583 to 601 CE. Obverse: O N mAVRC Tib P P AV, pearl-diademed, helmeted, draped, and cuirassed facing bust, holding globus cruciger. Reverse: VICTORI-A AVGG, angel standing facing, holding staff surmounted by Christogram and globus cruciger; E//CONOB. SB: 478, DOC I 5e. Size: 0.875" W (2.2 cm). 4.47 g.

Maurice Tiberius (Latin: Flavius Mauricius Tiberius Augustus) is best known for his successful conquest of the Sassanid Persians, and also for expanding the reach of the Eastern Roman Empire and Constantinople to the Northern Africa and the Western Mediterranean. However, his reign came to an abrupt end when a discontented Roman general had Maurice executed, thus rekindling the conflict with Sassanid Persia in 602 CE.
