Edward Hopper (American, 1882-1967)Attributed, Etching on ledger paper, circa 1930. Signed in graphite lower right with Hors Commerce designation. Framed and matted under glass.
Edward Hopper was a prominent American realist painter and printmaker. While he was most popularly known for his oil paintings, he was equally proficient as a watercolorist and printmaker in etching. Edward Hopper first visited the Cape in 1930. In 1934, he and his wife, Josephine, built a summer house overlooking a stretch of Fisher Beach in Truro. Hopper produced an oil painting of South Truro Church in 1930. Prior to painting his subjects, Hopper often worked out composition and details in sketches and etchings. This small etching is possibly a study for his painting of the same subject
