Title/Content of Map: A Chart Shewing Part of the Coast of N.W. America, with the Tracks of His Majesty's Sloop Discovery and Armed Tender Chatham . . . [Columbia River to Northern California]Date Printed: 1798Cartographer: VancouverSize: 31" x 24.5"
Nice example of the first edition of Vancouver's chart of the Northwest Coast of America from Cape Lookout and the P. Vancouver on the Columbia River to just north of San Francisco. The map has the distinction of being the first printed map to show Mount Hood. The map was prepared by George Robinson in London to illustrate the first edition of Vancouver's Voyage of Discovery to the North Pacific Ocean…published in London, and is the first large format map to focus on the Oregon and Northern California Coastline based upon actual surveys.
Vancouver's voyage to the Northwest Coast of America is best described as the last major exploration of the North Pacific. Thereafter, subsequent discoveries were primarily incidental to voyages in pursuit of commerce and fur trade. Vancouver began his career as a midshipman on James Cook’s second expedition. As commander of his own fleet in three seasons, he demonstrated that there was no link between Hudson’s Bay and the Pacific, and his charts of the lower Columbia River aided Lewis and Clark in the final stages of their overland expedition. There is amazing detail considering the scale, and many places are named.
