The Faberge chess set, made by the work master Karl Gustav Hjalmar Armfelt. This exquisite 24 gold-plated and sterling silver mounted hard stone set has pieces carved of black onyx and red agate. The board is made of alternating squares of white calcite and black onyx with a red agate rim. This board is presented in a stunning black ostrich leather box; the chess pieces are stored in a separate compartment also made of black ostrich. About Faberge History: The Faberge family originated in France but was forced to leave the country due to religious persecution. During the 18th century, the family settled in Russia. Peter Carl Faberge was born on May 30, 1846, the son of a goldsmith. After apprenticing with several master goldsmiths in Germany, France and England, Peter Carl Faberge returned to St. Peters burg a highly accomplished craftsman. In 1885, Peter Carl Faberge presented the first Imperial Egg to Czar Alexander III and soon became the most famous jeweler in the world.
