Engraved map, hand-colored. 46.5x54 cm (18x21¼").
A copy of the famed map first produced by Henricus Hondius and Jan Jansson in 1636, very well executed, and known to have fooled a number of collectors, and not a few dealers, in the past. McLaughlin describes it thus: "Later reproduction, [unknown date], with 'Amstelodami., Excusum apud Iudocum et Henricum Hondium, Anno 1631." with text in manuscript appearance. Without I. de Ceintras below I.S. Marco off west coast of California, with changed ship and sea monster vignettes and with compass rose below Bermuda. Falsely attributed to Judocum and Henry Hondius, but of uncertain age." See McLaughlin 6. Provenance: H. Lawrence Wilsey of Pebble Beach, California.
