Description
Civil War CDVsCivil War Generals Banks, Buckner, Pike & Sayer, Lot of 4 CDVs, Published by E. & H. T. Anthony, NY, Fine-Very Fine.
Each CDV is an albumen photographic portrait--two are retouched prints, and the other two are from photographic negatives from Brady. Each approximately 4” x 2.5,” with clipped corners, and back stamps by either “E. Anthony” or “E. & H.T. Anthony.” Brady’s Civil War negatives fell into the hands of Anthony when he defaulted on payment for photographic supplies, and many of his most famous images were published by the Anthony firm. Very minor toning, soiling, and some minor fading; one is creased. Featuring two Union Generals: Nathaniel P. Banks, 1816-1894; and possibly Franklin Sawyer (the penciled notation on verso appears to read “Sayer,” but Boatner’s “Civil War Dictionary” lists a “Sawyer” but no Sayer as a general. The real “find” of this group are the two CSA generals: Simon B. Buckner, 1823-1914, a Kentuckian who was a lifelong friend of U.S. Grant after training with him at West Point--later was Democratic Governor of Kentucky and a pallbearer at Grant’s funeral; and Albert Pike, 1809-1891, a wealthy newspaperman, poet, and lawyer who negotiated with Native Americans to try to win them over to the Confederacy.
