Roy Lichtenstein (American, 1923-1997). "Nude Reading [from the Nudes series]". Original color relief print. 1994. Signed, numbered, and dated in pencil, lower right; blind stamp (Tyler Graphics Ltd. chop), lower right; workshop number (RL94-3102) in pencil, lower left verso. Edition of 60. White 350 gram Rives BFK mould-made paper. Full margins. Very fine impression with fresh, bright, bold colors. Condition: overall near fine; some minor printer ink smudges (2) verso, not visible recto; a few minor handling creases in the margins. Literature/catalogue raisonne: Corlett 288; see also Cohen-Tyler (1994). Overall size: 30 5/8 x 36 1/4 in. (778 x 921 mm). Image size: 24 1/8 x 30 1/2 in. (613 x 775 mm). According to ‘Gordon’s Art Reference’ the auction record for another impression of this print is $129,946 (£85,875) at Christie's, London, 03/20/2013, lot #145. More recent sales show prices realized of $112,500 (Phillps, New York, 4/25/2016, lot #61) and $111,700 (Freeman’s, 11/2/2014, lot #99). This highly important and scarce print, one of the six images and three states that compose the Nude series, was, like the others in the group, based on "love" and "girl" comic-book illustrations, not live models. Lichtenstein is quoted in a newspaper article in November 1994 as having said that the nude form itself is "a good excuse to contrast undulating and volumetric form with rigid geometry." Printed and published by Tyler Graphics, Mount Kisco, New York. Image copyright © The Estate of Roy Lichtenstein. [26383-7-40000]
