Painting of gate with flowers by Ludwig Hesshaimer, signed and dated 1951. Painting: 23.5"x 18.5" in a frame: 27.5"x 22.5".From Wiki:Ludwig Hesshaimer (born March 10, 1872 in Kronstadt , Transylvania , died January 10, 1956 in Rio de Janeiro ) was an Austrian draftsman , etcher and illustrator .Hesshaimer was originally a career officer, after nine years in the army, he was drawing teacher at various military education institutions of the Habsburg monarchy. At the outbreak of the First World War , he stayed in Sarajevo.Short-term on leave from military service, Hesshaimer studied at the Vienna Academy and trained at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt under Ludwig Michalek in the etching. From February 1915 Hesshaimer was a member of the art group in kuk Kriegspressequartier . He worked in Galicia and the Bukovina in 1916 in the Balkan war theater and later as an art group leader and liaison officer in the Army Group of the Archduke Eugen in South Tyrol . Hesshaimer even made it to the deputy head of the art group in the war press district. He was one of the first artists to exhibit their war drawings in Vienna. Hesshaimer wrote an autobiographical description of his activity as a war painter as an officer and draftsman in the kuk-Kriegspressequartier. He consistently describes his fellow artists as productive and industrious, but not one: Carl Leopold HollitzerThis would have been a "prosperous bohemian" but "lazy and malicious". "Most of all he sat in cabarets, where he sang songs of the Landsknechts, or in coffee houses, where he caricatured his surroundings on paper napkins and beer mats in a snappy manner." About the zeal of Hesshaimers and others joked on the other hand Hollitzer, so he is asked at a lunch to Hesshaimer He replied: "Yes, he has to draw a sheet quickly before the soup, otherwise she will not taste it." Hesshaimers drawings from the war go sometimes in the caricature , although by no means the biting character of the work Hollitzers respectively. After the Second World War Hesshaimer lived in Brazil .
