Description: 2 volumes. 551;545 leaves. Engraved frontispiece in Volume 1. (4to) 27.5x22 cm (11¾x8¾") period full calf, modern calf rebacking with red and black morocco labels. Sixth edition overall, second quarto edition. The work was printed by several different printers, both as impressions for weekly publication and for publication in volumes. Johnson's Dictionary was viewed as the prominent dictionary of its time, and the foremost on the English language until the Oxford English Dictionary was published almost 200 years later. Unlike most modern dictionaries Johnson included humor and prejudice into many definitions: "Oats. n.s. [aten, Saxon.] A grain, which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people."
