The famous novel of a group of young men who have enlisted in the German Army of WWI, the bloodiest and worst of all wars. "These young men become enthusiastic soldiers, but their world of duty, culture, and progress breaks into pieces under the first bombardment in the trenches. Through years of vivid horror, Paul holds fast to a single vow: to fight against the hatred that meaninglessly pits young men of the same generation but different uniforms against one another – if only he can come out of the war alive." (N.B., quote from web site of GoodReads.) This book and its sequel were on the list of books banned in Nazi Germany and burned; internationally it was an immediate success, selling 2.5 million copies in 22 languages in its first 18 months in print. In 1930 it was made into a film which won an Academy Award, and again in 1979 it was once again made into a film. Donated by Swan's Fine Books, Walnut Creek, CA.

Condition: Good only, with a sound structure including a strong text block and solid hinges, the corners are slightly bumped but not rubbed, and the book is free of prior owner markings; some overall soiling to the boards, an old damp-stain to part of the top of the text block extending to the top fore-edge corner of the front pastedown, and very light rippling to the first dozen or so pages, not obscuring or affecting the text in any way. The dust jacket is also good, it is entire but with a fair amount of wear including some small chips and tears, soiling to the front and sunning to the spine; it is unclipped although no price was printed on the jacket.
