WWII ARCHIVE of JAMES EDWARD HILGERT, USNR--Petty Officer 2nd Class, Radarman 2nd Class on the U.S.S. Mellette (APA-156) Haskell-Class Attack Transport. Extensive lot includes over 300 pieces; photographs and miscellaneous ephemera. It is interesting to note that the USS Mellette was very active in the Pacific Theater. Some of the operations included training in Hawaii, the assault on Iwo Jima, the Okinawa campaign, and the witnessing of the official surrender of the Japanese in Tokyo Bay. This lot includes the memorabilia of James Hilgert during and after his time of active duty. There are a wide variety of snapshot photographs, military paperwork, a printed silk Japan parade flag. Lot Includes:
  • A period souvenir album with palm trees and graphics of Hawaiian girls on the cover. Identification in ink on cover, "HILBERT". This album has 130 images...107 on album pages and 23 which have become loose from album. Subjects include; US Naval training in Hawaii, occupation of Saipan with pictures of Japanese taken by the 4th Marine Division, fleet landing in Pasig River (Philippines), ruins of important ?
  • Philippine buildings, B-29's over Tokyo Bay on VJ Day, Yokosuka Naval Base, Vancouver BC real photograph postcards, and more. Album size 8-1/4" x 9-1/8". Images range in size 1-1/4" x 2" to postcard size.
  • Lot also includes these items listed below (and more). Items vary considerably in size--please see scans. There are about 140 photographic images and 40 pieces of ephemera.
  • James Edward Hilgert's US Navy ID card, Radarman 2nd class training certificate, Liberty Card, Invitation to USS Mellette Commissioning Ceremony, honorable discharge papers, etc.
  • There are photographs of Hilgert in uniform, snapshots of him & his shipmates underway and overseas.

  • A mimeograph shipboard copy of the radio transcript for the USS MELLETTE COMBAT INFORMATION CENTER ACTION REPORT--"The following report includes the transmissions of pertinent interest between the air observer and his control station during the invasion of Iwo Jima beginning 19 FEB 1945". Of great note is this excerpt which captures one of the significant events of WWII history--the US
  • MARINES RAISING THE FIRST FLAG ON IWO JIMA. "1052. AMERICAN FLAG HOISTED ON 'HOT ROCKS'. MT. SURIBACHI IS NOW OURS.".
  • Information about Hilgert as taken from his Notice of Separation from US Naval Service. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA. Was a USNR Radarman 2nd class, received for his service PACIFIC THEATER RIBBON (2 stars) AMERICAN THEATER RIBBON and VICTORY MEDAL. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and resided in Valencia, Pennsylvania after the war.
  • Condition: typical signs of wear including occasional soiling, scuffs, and edge wear. several loose and unmounted photos.
