Fragment from the "Tsurezuregusa" or "Essays on Idleness", a collection of essays written by the Japanese monk Yoshida Kenko between 1330 and 1332. This calligraphy attributed to Asukai Masanaga (active 1400-1450). Section 134 of the text. Laid to card with gilt edge, Forsythe Gallery of Ann Arbor, MI label verso, in black box frame, under glass, OS: 13 3/4" x 12 1/4", SS: 9 1/2" x 8". Very good condition, old repairs.
The nearly complete story relates how he was once looking in the mirror and realized how ugly he was, thereafter quit looking in the mirror and added years to his life.
