North America, early 20th century CE. A wooden form for an upright wall pedestal display of an elk's head and powerful neck. This form would have been used to mount a taxidermied animal and to give an anatomically accurate but dramatic representation. It would have been the product of field observation and specimen collection, skeletal measurements, and sensitive shaping. Note the careful form of the nostrils and eyes. Size: 11.5" W x 31" H (29.2 cm x 78.7 cm)
Provenance: ex-Historia Antiques, James Caswell collection, California, USA
