Lot 0029
  • Title/Content of Map: Geographia Sacra
  • Date Printed: 1598 or 1601
  • Cartographer: Abraham Ortelius
  • Material/Medium: Hand color, thick paper, strong impression. No text on verso. From the first modern atlas- the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by Abraham Ortelius.
  • Size: 18 x 23.5 inches

This first edition of this map appeared only in two editions of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (1598 and 1601) and was replaced by another version in the later editions. More background: Map shows Europe and the Middle East, as a World described by biblical writers. In the lower part a view of the World as understood in the early 17th century.

Abraham Ortelius (1527 - 1598) was a Flemish cartographer & geographer, celebrated as the creator of the first modern atlas, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theatre of the World). Ortelius' work, the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, was the first uniformly sized, systematic collection of maps; this work can therefore be called the first atlas (although the term was not used until 20 years later by Mercator).
