1693 map of Florida and the Great Lakes by Robert Morden. 5 x 5 inches. A very special map--one of the very earliest obtainable English maps of the American colonies. A Map of Florida and Ye Great Lakes of Canada. Full hand-coloring. From Morden's Geography Rectified. This map of the Colonies names the five Great Lakes and notes each of the primary British Colonies. Approximately 30 coastal place names appear south of Long Island to the Mouth of the Mississippi. The Course of the Mississippi (R. Spriito Sancto al Rio Grande) is of note, taking a very direct northerly route, with a terminus well west of its true location. A mythical set of mountains is shown along the western banks of the Mississippi and a similar fanciful range extends from the St. Lawrence to the Mississippi River. While the Morden maps used in the rare Atlas Terestris appeared as early as 1687, they were also issued in Morden's Georgraphy Rectified a few years earlier, which is where this example came from. This would be the first appearance of many of the American maps, which were either newly issued or revised for the atlas edition. Matted and framed. Fine condition with almost no bleed-through from reverse.Domestic: Flat-rate of $4.00 to anywhere within the contiguous U.S.International: Foreign shipping rates are determined by destination.Location: This item ships from Ohio
