Henry Edward Bird was an English chess player and author. He wrote books chess including its history, gameplay, and strategy. Although Bird was a practicing accountant, not a professional chess player, it has been said that he "lived for chess, and would play anybody anywhere, anytime, under any conditions."
“Chess Openings” was first published in 1877 and was Bird’s second work. It is filled with illustrations and diagrams which show how the game is played, giving insight and strategy to the reader, specific to winning.
