Item Details
Description
George Washington: Pater Patriæ... the Holy Grail of GW Inaugural Buttons. Albert WI-19B, DeWitt GW-1789-41, 25 mm copper shell with lead-filled back. Half-length military bust of Washington facing one-quarter left or dexter. It is inscribed "General Washington Pater Patriæ". This is the only portrait button in the accepted canon of George Washington inaugural buttons and has always been at the top of the want list for anyone interested in the period. It may also be the earliest artifact that refers to Washington as the "Father of His Country". We have only sold one example (November 2015) which was weakly struck. This example is well-struck with strong detail. There is a slight depression between the "R" in Pater" and the "P" in "Patriæ" which the catalog photo accentuates. It is hardly visible when viewed in person straight on. There are certainly less than 10 specimens in existence and likely closer to 6 or 7. This may be the finest example known. Even the example at Mt. Vernon, recently acquired, had a crack running through it. This is destined for a place of honor in any collection!
