Details: 5pcs Prints Artist's Proofs EARLY SALVATORE GRIPPI ETCHINGS 1952-1953 Artist Signed Figurative Abstract Expressionist Mythological Plates New York School

These 5 etchings, prints, and artist's proofs were created by noted New York School artist Salvatore Grippi. Four of the 5 pieces are signed, titled, and dated 1952 or 1953. These prints represent some of Grippi's earliest experiments in the medium and display different variations of technique in their production. The piece entitled "Prometheus Bound" is labeled as a 2nd state proof.

The prints range in size; the smallest etching measures approximately 10.5" x 10" and the largest measures approximately 20" x 17".

Worth Auctions is pleased to offer a number of rare works by Salvatore Grippi, an important New York School painter who worked and exhibited alongside the likes of de Kooning, Nevelson, and Kline during the heyday of the Abstract Expressionist movement in the 1950s. In 1968, Grippi established the art department at Ithaca College, where he taught until 1991. In 2011, he was honored with a solo retrospective at Cornell University's Johnson Museum of Art. This was the last time that Grippi's work was displayed in his hometown - until now. Worth Auctions is proud to offer Grippi’s works to the public. He was a significant figure in postwar abstraction and his work from this period has graced the walls of MoMA, the Whitney, and the Met but has seldom appeared at auction. It is fitting that these pieces are being shown and sold here in Ithaca, where Grippi taught and maintained a studio for most of his career, while they are also visible to collectors all over the world.

Please attend our live sale to view these prints and other interesting artwork in person.
Condition / Notes: These pieces show nicely displaying only a typical range of age and wear indications.
