This work on heavy paper stock depicts the French “Marianne” an allegorical figure for Liberty and reason as she embraces and protects the two peasant women representing the geographic areas of Alsace and Lorraine returned to France after having been annexed by Germany. Signed in pencil by the artist lower left margin and with the artist name in the image upper right corner along with the year “1917”. Moderate water damage to upper right margin and corner, age-related paper tanning, overall attic/ handling patina, 1 in tear left margin, 2 ¼ in tear right edge. 19 ½ x 29 ¾ in.
