Rare matched pair of Maria & Julian Martinez black ware pottery vases - 14 3/8" h x 9" diameter at the widest part. Signed on bases Maria & Julian. Gifted in the 1950s to a commissioner with the Bureau of Indian Affairs with continuous ownership by the family until now. Maria Montoya Martinez (1887 - 1980, San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico) was a Native American artist who created internationally known pottery. Martinez, her husband - Julian, and other family members examined traditional Pueblo pottery styles and techniques to create pieces which reflect the Pueblo people's legacy of fine artwork and crafts. Very good condition with only minor rub marks on sides - see pics.
