Rare matched pair of Maria & Julian Martinez black ware pottery vases - 14 3/8" h x 9" diameter at the widest part. Signed on bases Maria & Julian. Gifted in the 1950s to a commissioner with the Bureau of Indian Affairs with continuous ownership by the family until now. Maria Montoya Martinez (1887 - 1980, San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico) was a Native American artist who created internationally known pottery. Martinez, her husband - Julian, and other family members examined traditional Pueblo pottery styles and techniques to create pieces which reflect the Pueblo people's legacy of fine artwork and crafts.
