Lot 0254
This view of a New England homestead dates from around 1870. It is oil paint on an early albumen photograph, and framed in a carved walnut frame. Overall size is 11"x12.5" This painting is a wonderful example of artists embracing 19th century technological advances. In the 1870's, albumen photography started to replace drawings and engravings. Many of the photographers were former painters, and they enhanced their photos by painting on top of them. This allowed them to have incredible details, like the people standing in front of the house, without having to render them all precisely by hand. Item ID:5381
