Lot 0071
Black gouache on a sheet of disposable palette paper, bird study, signed with the initials (Robert Motherwell*, 1915-1991) and dated '55. Approximate measurements 11 3/4 x 15 1/2 inches. Very good overall condition; some slight fraying at the edges. Unframed for inspection and post-auction shipping.

Lot Note: For a similar-themed work of the same period painted on a sheet of nearly identical palette paper, see Bonhams, New York, November 9, 2010, Lot 80.

Provenance: Dorothy Freedman, New York City. Acquired, together with drawings ascribed to Eva Hesse, from the latter by the current owner and the current owner's family. [According to the consignor, Dorothy Freedman was apparently associated with a major advertising firm, Warwick & Legler, NYC].
