BOOKS: [Vampires] 1904 La Morte Amoureuse, Theophile Gautier. La Morte Amoureuse [The Dead Lover], color engravings by Eugene Decisy, Librairie de la Collection des Dix, 1904. No. 73 from an edition of 300, this is one of 90 copies on Japanese paper and containing three states of the engravings--one within the text, and bound at the back, an impression of the black plate alone followed by the full-colored version. Leather spine and tips, marbled endpapers and gilded top page edges.

Provenance: Estate of Huguette Clark

Notes/Literature: Huguette Marcelle Clark (1906-2011) was an heiress and philanthropist, who became well known again late in life as a recluse, living in a hospital for more than 20 years while her mansions remained empty. She was an accomplished artist and musician, having studied under famous portrait painter Tadeusz Styka, and her paintings were exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery, Washington in 1925


Good, water spots visible on edges of first 20 or so pages and a few pages at back, not affecting text or illustrations, page 30 and tissue overlay on 31 discolored due to a dried flower pressed between, be advised that all lots in this sale will exhibit some degree of wear due to age and/or handling
