"Number 1 of only 24 copies signed by the author." Volume 1 (War and Peace, volume I) contains a leaf with a long passage written in the author's hand, from "Walk in the Light While There Is Light" which is then signed at the bottom "Leo Tolstoy" and dated 21 July 1906. The passage written is: "You are seeking your best advantage, and so are we; the only difference is that we see our advantage in different things. You believe that your well- being consists in riches and honors; we believe in something else. Our belief shows us that our advantage is not in violence, but in submissiveness; not in wrath, but in giving everything away. And we, like plants in the light, cannot help striving in the direction where we see our advantage. " Full leather bindings, 5 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches. Elaborate gold decoration, with inlaid red leather panel inside covers, top pages edges gilded. Volumes 21 and 22 (Resurrection) are dated 1904, all others are 1899.
