164. VERY RARE EARLY WOODEN CONTINENTAL FIGURES, SAID TO REPRESENT THE ANGEL AND TOBIASS. 20" figure has carved wooden head with brown enamel eyes, well-detailed ears, tapered fine brows, closed mouth, mohair wig, dowel-jointed neck attached to slender body, dowel-jointed at shoulders, elbows, hips and knees, plus jointing at mid-forearm; lower limbs have painted finish, artistically carved and detailed hands, wears red amd gold gown with gilt trim and paper lining; 10" figure has brown enamel eyes, finely tapered brows, open/closed mouth with shaded lips and two tiny upper teeth, mohair wig, body jointed at shoulder, below hips and knees, bare feet, wears gown matching that of larger figure. Commentary: Continental figures, rare to find in original costume, late 18th century, very rare neck jointing on angel allows head to tilt up and down and side-to-side; each has wonderful carving and original finish, original gowns; age wear to finish; 20" figure has broken feet, otherwise all good condition.
