Description
Ayton, Richard; Drawn and Engraved by William Daniell. A VOYAGE ROUND GREAT BRITAIN, UNDERTAKEN IN THE SUMMER OF THE YEAR 1813… WITH A SERIES OF VIEWS ILLUSTRATIVE OF THE CHARACTER AND PROMINENT FEATURES OF THE COAST. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1814-1825. Imperial quarto, 14.25" x 10.25". 8 volumes bound in 6. With 308 hand-colored aquatint plates (complete) on heavy stock and an uncolored aquatint dedication plate in first volume; without the additional uncolored stipple-engraving of "Kemaes Head, Pembrokshire" and map found in some copies. Handsomely bound in later 19th c. deep-green morocco with spines in gilt over compartments, boards ruled in gilt, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, and marbled endpapers. All bindings quite solid and attractive, some light rubbing/scuffing to some hinges and edges/corners, one volume with small tear at base of spine, a few small scuffs and similar minor blemishes. Contents with occasional light foxing (primarily to text leaves facing plates) and some offsetting from plates, else an excellent example. A clean and handsome set in nicely preserved bindings, Very Good. ****************************** "A magnificent series of plates, almost all of equal quality. Valuable as a record and exquisite in its presentation. The most important colour plate book on British topography" (Tooley.) [Tooley 177; Abbey, Scenery 16]
