Purchased Privately, Chicago, IL.CF. Stephen Greene was born in New York City in 1917. His early roots in the arts began with his training at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design, both in New York City. He earned his B.F.A. in 1942 and an M.A. in 1945 from the State University of Iowa. He also studied at William and Mary College and with the painter Philip Guston. Greene’s paintings consistently emote an inquisitiveness of line, feeling and form. His mature works resemble the iconic works of Robert Motherwell and Helen Frankenthaler. Exhibition venues included the Whitney Museum, the National Academy of Design, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery, Wash., D.C., and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
