Four-Barrel "Sharps and Hankins" Pepperbox Pistol; these compact breech-loading derringers were also referred to as "muff pistols", as they were easily concealable and most commonly used by women for purposes of self-defense; this particular specimen purports to be a model 3; it was manufactured between the years 1859-1874; it boasts brass sights and smooth walnut grips, that although darkened with age, are in otherwise good condition; the blue is mostly intact, but the case hardened finish suffers from considerable pitting and loss on the barrel cluster; the barrel is 3-1/2" long and the total length of the pistol is 6-1/4"; the barrel flute is marked "ADDRESS SHARPS & HANKINS, PHILADELPHIA, PENN"; the right side of frame presents faint illegible text which would typically be the patent date; it fires a .32 rimfire caliber; the action of this pistol is seized; the underside of the frame is stamped with the serial number 11300
