A double red lens slide mount Dressel lamp with ERIE below one lens. It is complete with pot and burner. The old rusty peeling paint indicate that this was always a red & red lamp. Possibly used as a must stop train order? Unknown use to me. Definitely used but not abused.
March 24 update from our consignor:FYI, the ERIE lamp in item #291 is I of 2 I got from some signal maintainers off the Erie Branch from Avon to Rochester. It was used along with one of the “wig-wag” crossing warnings—before the “state of the art” flashers we are familiar with. They were working at a particular crossing next to a job I had going, so after looking at my job,I sat for a while and watched them and started a conversation which led to my going to Avon next day to meet them and pick up the 2 lamps---all fueled and ready to go!! I never drained the fuel and there is probably some still in the tank after about 60 years!
