Jade. China, late Qing to early
Republican period, first quarter
This graceful cong in spinach green jade has an interesting aspect, as the sides are not completely flat, but rather slightly curved, following the circular shape of the inner core. The collared areas at the top and bottom are also not clearly defined, and are fairly irregular in thickness and shape: only the corners meet to form sharp vertical edges, making small triangular sections where they attach to the circular openings. The jade, mottled with numerous white, marble-like striations and occasional orange spots, is highly polished, both on the outside and within the core.
