Skullcap, silver. Tibet, 19th cent.
A purely cultic object, consisting of a human skullcap and a silver fitting which full covers the inside. Outside, on the rim, is a row of finely wrought skulls, 42 in total. Inside are four others, the four cardinal directions. Particularly expressive is the re-lief of the skullcap's bone with its very attractive, deep-red patination. This cultic ob-ject is a symbol of universal transience. Well preserved.
