During his 1912 stay in the US, Blommers discussed his painting technique in an interview with the New York Times, offering a rare insight into his approach. "I never make a drawing first before I begin a portrait, or a picture. I paint right away, and draw with the brush and with color. I look first, last, always for tone. I use a very simple palette, and no medium. I have many pictures going at one time, and I work on the one I feel the most, and I work months and years on one picture, searching always for beauty of tone, for atmosphere, for envelopment, for simplicity."
