**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. An elegant translucent and ever-so-slightly green glass vessel presenting a pear-shaped body and a flared rim, all upon a raised concave foot. Adding to the aesthetic of this piece is a single trail wrapped around the juncture between the body and neck of the vessel. Translucency was highly prized in the classical world as noted by Pliny in the poetic quote below! Size: 3.125" in diameter x 3.75" H (7.9 cm x 9.5 cm)

"There is, furthermore, opaque white glass and others that reproduce the appearance of fluor-spar, blue sapphires or lapis lazuli, and, indeed, glass exists in any color . . . However, the most highly valued glass is colorless and transparent, as closely as possible resembling rock-crystal." (Pliny, Natural History XXXVI.198 from "Solid Liquid" catalogue, Fortuna Fine Arts, New York, 1999, p. 64.)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection acquired before 2000
