New World, Guatemala, ca. mid 20th century CE. An expressive mask - hand-carved and painted in a vibrant color palette - depicting a human visage with wide-open green eyes that are lined in red and black and characteristically long-lashed, arched brows, a pronounced up-turned nose, and open mouth with delineated teeth and red lips, red cheek marks on a ruddy pink complexion, and most interestingly a spikey mustache and beard comprised of tufts of facial hair that appear to stand on end, spikey golden ornaments or hair emerging from his head, and a tall seed pod ornament that still contains seeds and rattles when shook, protruding at a 180 degree angle from the head, as if defying gravity. Size: 8.25" W x 22.5" H (21 cm x 57.2 cm)

Provenance: private Healy collection, Studio City, California, USA, acquired over the last twenty years
