Lot 0124
Made by Shepard Hardware Company Buffalo, NY - Circa 1888 The Picture Gallery Bank is unusual because it has two distinct functions. Firstly, like every other mechanical bank, the owner can save money inside of it. But it’s second function served the didactic purpose of teaching the alphabet to small children. There are three windows on the front of the bank and a green dial, which rotates the images into those windows. In the window on the left appear the 26 letters of the alphabet; in the window at the top appear the 26 corresponding numbers for those letters; and in the window at the right appear pictograms that represent each letter. In this instance, we have the left window set to the letter “P”. That is the sixteenth letter in the alphabet and it stands for “pig”.
