Very unusual 19th century patinated and gilded metal netsuke in a shape of a Mandarin duck. Finely modeled and chiseled, beautiful depiction of various feather patterns, wonderful gilding. Material is shakudo (alloy of copper and gold) with characteristic black patination resembling lacquer. Loop on the bottom serving as himotoshi, beautiful patina. Signed SHIGEMITSU on the bottom by the loop - an ojime from Eileen Plankington collection by the same artist was sold by Christie’s in NY in 1984.
