Ancient Near East / Central Asia, Sasanian (Sassanian / Sassanid) Empire, ca. 2nd to 7th century CE. A charming cast bronze, book-shaped casket. Two large hinges - still functional - allow the casket to be opened. A large hook is attached to the cover, which presumbly once functioned as a latch with another piece. The lid has richly incised geometric motifs on its surface. Size: 1" L x 2" W x 2" H (2.5 cm x 5.1 cm x 5.1 cm)

Condition

Very dark, matte patina on surface; patina has chipped away on one hinge but is otherwise in good condition. Nice preservation of surface detail. Slight bending to form, and part of the latch may be lost.
