3rd-4th century AD. A schist panel with Maitreya to the centre, seated cross-legged on a raised platform draped with a cloth; hair pulled up into a top-knot with curls across the brow, arching moustache to the face; elongated ears with large circular earrings; necklaces to the chest, armlets and bracelets, right hand held up in blessing, left hand on lap holding closed lotus flower; to the sides columns with lion bases supporting rectangular recessed panels with acanthus leaf capitals, cloth canopy to the top; to either side busts of disciples with turbans; smaller figures to the top of each column; to the sides recessed panels with seated females in long robes and wearing headdresses, hands raised in blessing, crossed feet resting on footstools; columns to the side supporting pavilions with lattice screens, small columns supporting roof with leaf-shaped tiles; to the left a female holding a vase, to the right a female looking into a mirror; mounted on a custom-made stand. 15.4 kg total, 41cm including stand (16 1/4"). Private collection, North London; acquired in the early 1990s.
