A large example, with mushroom-shaped pommel chiseled with leaves in relief, the spirally-carved grip with twisted steel wire wrap and turkshead knots intact, the complex guard with finely chiseled and stepped midpoints finials, with a pierced plate set in the ring guard. The broad, straight, double-edged and continuously tapering blade with short fuller at either forte inscribed on the right, 15 SANCTA MARIA 90 (Holy Mary 1590) and on the left, 15 ORA PRO NOBIS 90 (Pray For Us 1590,) and struck at the forte with a rectangular maker’s mark bearing an I. Dated 1590. Minor wear. 117.9cm. Condition II
