[6], 432 pp. Translated into Italian by Paolo Antonio Rolli. Engraved title page vignette. (8vo) 19½x13 cm (7¾x5¼"), period boards, paper spine label. First Italian Edition.

The first Italian translation of Paradise Lost, translated in loose hendecasyllables by Paolo Antonio Rolli, who also contributed extensive observations and an accurate Life of Milton. Milton's great work contains no shortage of attacks on the ecclesiastical hierarchy and practices of the Church of Rome. Although the translator omitted the most compromising passages, this translation did not pass the scrutiny of Roman censors, and in 1758 it was included in the Index of prohibited books.

Soiling and wear to binding, remnants of library label to base of spine; hinges gently cracked, brief early notations to endleaves in pencil and ink, textblock clean; very good.
