One of the two major works of the antiquary Matthew Parker (1504-1575), originally privately printed in a small edition in 1572.
Parker assembled a significant collection of books and manuscripts to further his research into possible early forms of the Christian Church in England independent of Rome. His persistent inquiries (earning him the epithet "Nosey Parker") resulted in the preservation of some of the material that was scattered as a consequence of the closing of the monasteries that might otherwise have perished. Such materials provided sources for the present work.
