An uncommon work by the prolific novelist William Harrison Ainsworth, a historical tale based on the life of James "The Admirable" Crichton (1550-1585?), about whom many others have also written stories and plays, probably most famously J.M. Barrie. Wolff 45; not in Sadleir (who had a later illustrated edition); NCBEL III, 911.
